Overview
Welcome to Uluwehi Farm and Nursery. We are a small, family run, organic farm that is engaged in the development and dynamics of a medium scale permaculture site. Our current offerings include: permaculture internships and courses, and tropical fruit trees. We grow over 50 mango varieties, jackfruit, sapodilla and champadek, marang, durian, high quality gmo free papayas, Hawaiian bananas, among others. Check for upcoming permaculture internships and courses!

Permaculture
Permaculture is a design system
Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of the landscape with people providing their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. -Graham Bell, The Permaculture Way

GMO Free

Due to the profound lack of scientifically sound research regarding the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the absence of respect for the sacredness of life as demonstrated through the creation of these organisms, we believe GMOs have no place in our community or world. Perhaps this is an unusual stance for a geneticist to take, but I prefer my actions to be for the true good of the people. Therefore my time spent in this area includes testing for GMO contamination, public education, and supporting and working with the Hawaiian Genetic Engineering Action Network. Please visit www.higean.org for more information on genetic engineering in Hawaii and beyond. You may be surprised by what you are eating! Be GMO Free!

Alternative Energy
Uluwehi Farm is currently off the grid, powered by a solar voltaic system, designed and maintained by Shannon. A reconfigured hotwater heater tank reoriented to the sun is currently used to generate the majority of our hot water use. Future projects may include a solar fruit dryer, biogas digester and wind turbine among others. A fondness for low tech devices and solutions is also integrated with more sophisticated alternative energy solutions.

Alternative Construction
From super adobe to wattle and daub to ferrocement, we have a strong and varied interest in alternatives to conventional building. While our current wariness of the planning and building departments here on big island have stalled any large projects, we have been helping hands in cob, wattle and daub, and ferrocement projects, and built our own super adobe with yurt roof and sleeping pod on our previous site. We are currently growing tropical hardwood bamboos that we intend to use in projects in the future. The soil here would be excellent for compressed earth blocks…. And our minds continue to run away with us….
